When we spend hours in the dance studio training our limbs to move and work together as one unit, it's easy to forget that our bodies are actually made up of trillions and trillions of cells. Taking care of our bodies on the most microscopic of levels can have huge physical and mental health benefits. How can we expect to feed our bodies poorly and neglect it of sleep but perform with physical strength and mental focus?
Let's go back to the middle school science lab for a second. Remember those things called mitochondria? Turns out that they're important in keeping the dancing body happy and healthy.
What do mitochondria do?
As the powerhouse of cells, mitochondria take in nutrients, break them down, and create energy rich molecules for the cell.
How can I take care of my mitochondria?
- Eat antioxidant rich food
- Exercise: That's right. Just by dancing you're already taking care of them!
- Increase Omega-3 fats: These guys help strengthen the mitochondrial membranes. Added bonus: they also have antioxidants and phytonutrients! Not sure where to get these? Throw some walnuts in your dance bag.
- Get your zzz's: Sleep is magical. Aim for 7-9 hours every single night.
