Perspective: Mentorship Interview with Mentee, Hannah Owulade

Name: Hannah Owulade
Age: 12
Where are you from/Where do you live? I was born in Bronx, New York, but currently I live in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
Mentor: Christine Shevchenko

What made you want to be a part of the PointePeople Mentorship Program?
I saw all of the amazing dancers applying and, at first, I wasn't going apply to because I just thought that I wouldn’t get chosen... but as a last minute decision, I thought of how amazing this opportunity would be if I were chosen, and I am BEYOND happy that I did apply.

What is your favorite part of the program, so far?
My favorite part of this program is just being able to see and take class with the mentors and mentees! It is amazing that we can receive corrections not only from our own mentors, but from others as well.

Is there anything unexpected you’ve learned or experienced through the program, so far?
Something unexpected I experienced through this program was the fact that we could take classes from all the other different mentors. The classes from the mentors have been truly outstanding and definitely helped me with my dancing a lot.

Most of all, I was actually able to meet my mentor in person and take class from her.

Best advice you’ve received from your mentor?
The best advice I’ve received from my mentor is: "Believe it to achieve it."

What would you tell anyone who is considering applying to be a mentee in the future?
I would tell someone who is considering applying to just go for it and to not get dispirited if you don’t make it. Everything in life has a purpose, and maybe if you try again next time, you’ll get chosen. If you are chosen, always be open to constructive criticism.

How is this program helping you to grow as an artist and dancer?
This program has helped me, personally, to gain more confidence in my ability as a dancer and being able to show my skills to others. Before this mentorship program, I doubted my dancing skills a lot, and now I have been able to use all the techniques that I’ve gained from other mentors as well as mine to perform.
