Perspective: Mentorship Interview with Mentee, Ximena de León

Name: Ximena de León
Age: 12

Where are you from? I am proudly from Guatemala
De donde eres? Soy orgullosamente de Guatemala

Where do you live? I live in Sololá. (In the volcano range of Guatemala)

Mentor: The kind and talented Sasha de Sola.

¿Quien es tu mentor? La amable y talentosa Sasha de Sola.

What made you want to be part of the PointePeople Mentorship program?
I did not know PointePeople existed. I found out about their mentoring program through my ballet teacher, and I decided to apply because it would be a good opportunity to improve on everything that has to do with ballet.

I sincerely wanted to be part of the program to see and learn from professional dancers. I was very excited to know that I could participate, and from day one, I thought about and waited for the moment when the mentors announced the winners!

Why did you want to work with your particular mentor?
I wanted to work with Sasha because I looked her up online and then discovered a video of her reading her book based on her life. It is so inspiring to see how she, after injuring her foot, did not let that stop her from continuing to dance.

Seeing this motivates me because you can see in plain sight the
love that Sasha has for ballet, and that is why I wanted to work with her and learn about her love for ballet to one day become like her.

What is your favorite part of the program, so far?
My favorite parts of the program are the coffee chats with my mentor. Through the coffee chats, I gain knowledge and experience that help me grow as a person and my desire to continue in ballet. But I can't not mention the master classes, because I also love to do classes with all my friends from PointePeople, see the talent they have, and also learn a little about them.

Is there anything unexpected that you have learned or experienced through the program?
Yes. I did not imagine being able to participate in master classes. Above all,
through them, I was able to meet all the mentees. It has been magical because I have been able to experience friendships at a distance.

What is the best advice you have ever received from your mentor?
The best advice I have received from Sasha is to never stop dreaming big and always believe in myself. Everything she shares with me always carries a message that encourages my desire to move on.

What would you say to someone who is considering applying to be a future mentee?
If it is your dream, never stop dreaming big because dreams come true. Also,
believe that you can succeed and win because everything in life is winning, when it comes from the hand of God.

How this mentorship program helping you grow as an artist and dancer?
As Sasha de Sola's mentee, I have improved a lot, from my technique to my balance to the way I see, feel, and love ballet!

  • For almost a year of living under the pandemic caused by the Corona Virus. It is encouraging to see that there are people like Sasha de Sola and companies like Pointe People who care about stimulating the lives and talents of so many children around the world.
My best wishes to all the Ballet students, so I encourage you to make the most of all the support and teaching.
Especially to Ximena de León from Sololá Guatemala. Follow your dreams, remember that the key to success is studying, working and being who you are. Never change.
Thanks to all for the big support to my niece Ximenita.
